Item specifics are the structured fields in an eBay listing: brand, size, colour, model, material and so on. They matter because buyers filter by them. If a buyer filters for “Size: M” and your jacket’s size field is empty, eBay Australia says your listing won’t appear in that filtered search, however good the title is.
This guide explains required and recommended specifics, how they affect search, and what to fill in for common resale categories.
What item specifics are
eBay Australia’s item specifics page describes them as information about your item “such as the brand, make, model, size, colour and style”. Each category has its own set of fields.
They are different from the title and description. The title is free text for search; the description is for detail and condition. Item specifics are the standardised facts that let eBay sort and filter listings consistently.
Required, required soon and recommended
eBay labels item specifics in three ways:
| Label | What it means |
|---|---|
| Required | You can only publish a new or revised listing once these are filled in |
| Required soon | Will become required; the listing flow shows the date |
| Recommended | Based on what buyers frequently search for; optional but useful |
Which fields are required depends on the category. eBay’s creating a listing page also warns that from September 2026, clothing and footwear listings with missing or unclear size values may be hidden until updated. Our eBay clothing requirements guide covers that change in detail.
Why item specifics affect sales
According to eBay Australia’s item specifics page, filling them in:
- lets your listing appear in buyers’ filtered search results;
- can move listings higher in search results;
- helps listings appear on external search engines such as Google Shopping.
eBay’s listing optimisation guide calls item specifics “crucial to your search visibility and sales”, and notes they help key information display properly on mobile.
What to fill in by category
These are the fields worth completing first for common resale stock. Your category’s form may show different or extra fields.
| Category | Fill in first |
|---|---|
| Clothing | Brand, size, size type, department, type, colour, material, style |
| Shoes | Brand, US shoe size, department, type, colour, model |
| Cameras and lenses | Brand, model, type, series, focal length or mount, features |
| Video games and consoles | Platform, model, region code, colour, storage capacity |
| Phones and electronics | Brand, model, storage capacity, colour, network, lock status |
| Homewares and collectables | Brand or maker, type, material, colour, pattern, era |
Leave a field blank rather than guess. A wrong brand or size is worse than a missing one, because it shows the item to the wrong buyers and invites returns.
Where to find the information
Most item specifics come from the item itself:
- Labels and tags for brand, size, material and country of manufacture.
- Model and regulatory plates on electronics and cameras, often under a battery cover or on the base.
- Packaging and manuals, if you have them.
- Measurements for size-related fields where the label is missing.
Photograph labels and model plates as you go. Clear label photos let you fill item specifics accurately later, and buyers can check them too. Our guide on how many photos an eBay listing needs includes label shots in each shot list.
Fixing item specifics on existing listings
eBay Australia’s item specifics page describes several ways to update listings already live:
- a filter in Active Listings to find listings missing item specifics;
- an Add item specifics bulk edit option;
- downloading and uploading a listings file from Active Listings;
- task reminders in Seller Hub.
Start with your oldest unsold listings. Missing specifics are a common reason a listing gets few views.
Where Listalong Snap fits
Listalong Snap is a phone app we are building that uses eBay’s category requirements to fill supported item specifics, such as brand, size, material, model and specifications, from your photos and notes. It only fills a field where there is enough evidence, and you can check and edit every value before publishing to eBay.
Snap is in private iPhone testing, with Android on the way. Sign up for launch updates to hear when it’s available.
