AI can write a useful first draft of an eBay listing from your photos. It is good at reading labels and suggesting titles, categories and item specifics. It cannot know what the photos don’t show: whether an item works, its exact measurements, what is missing or whether it is genuine.

Treat AI as a fast assistant for the typing, not a replacement for checking the item. This guide explains what these tools can and can’t do, where eBay’s own AI listing stands in Australia, and a short review checklist.

What an AI listing tool actually does

Most AI listing tools follow the same pattern:

  1. You take or upload photos of the item.
  2. The tool identifies the item from the photos and any visible labels.
  3. It suggests a title, category and item specifics such as brand, size, colour or model.
  4. Some tools also draft a description.
  5. You review the draft, set the price and publish.

The best tools also let you add your own notes, such as “untested” or “small mark on left cuff”, so the draft includes facts the camera can’t see.

eBay’s own AI listing tool

eBay calls its AI listing feature Magical Listing. In an announcement dated 9 April 2025, eBay said its simplified mobile selling flow lets sellers “take or upload a product image and use AI to help fill in item specifics”, with suggested product details and categories that the seller can review and approve. That announcement named the eBay app in the US, UK and Germany, for private sellers. It also described a bulk tool in Seller Hub that creates multiple listing drafts from batches of photos, again for the US, UK and Germany.

For Australia, eBay’s AI features page confirms that AI-suggested item descriptions are available to Australian sellers, generated “at the touch of a button” in the listing flow.

Updated 4 November 2026: eBay’s 28 October business update confirms that the latest Magical Listing experience has expanded to new and reactivated Australian listers. This replaces the earlier uncertainty based on the Q2 written announcement. See our Australian rollout update for the announcement details and a clothing review example.

In practice: open the listing flow in your own eBay app. If you see AI-suggested details after adding photos, you have the photo-first flow. If you only see a description suggestion, you have the older AI description feature.

What AI is good at

AI drafts are most reliable for facts that are visible and printed:

  • Brand and model from a clear label, badge or model plate.
  • Size from a readable size tag.
  • Category for common, recognisable items.
  • Colour, material and style where the photos are clear and well lit.
  • A tidy, consistent description structure, which saves most of the typing.

The clearer your label and detail photos, the better the draft. A blurry tag gives the tool nothing to read.

What AI can’t know from a photo

These details need to come from you:

DetailWhy AI can’t be relied on
Working conditionA photo can’t show whether something powers on, charges or works properly
MeasurementsSizes vary by brand; buyers need measured lengths, not guesses
Missing partsAI sees what is in the photo, not what should be in the box
AuthenticityA convincing fake can photograph like the real thing
Faults outside the photosSmells, internal damage and intermittent faults don’t show on camera
Your priceAI estimates are a starting point; sold listings show what buyers paid

Condition matters most. eBay Australia’s item condition definitions say a Used item in categories such as cameras and electronics is “fully operational and functions as intended”. If you haven’t tested an item, an AI tool should not choose Used for you. Our guide to untested vs for parts on eBay explains the safer choice.

A five-point review checklist for every AI draft

Before publishing an AI-written listing, check:

  1. Title. Does it name the right brand, model and size, in words a buyer would search? Remove any detail you can’t confirm.
  2. Item specifics. Compare each filled-in field against the labels. Leave a field empty rather than keep a wrong guess.
  3. Condition. Choose it yourself, based on what you tested and saw.
  4. Description. Delete anything invented, such as “works perfectly” or “barely worn”, and add flaws and measurements.
  5. Price. Check comparable eBay sold listings before accepting an estimate.

eBay’s picture policy does not allow photos that don’t accurately represent the item, or stock photos for used items. Keep your own photos of the actual item on every AI-assisted listing.

Is an AI listing tool worth it?

AI helps most when you list a lot of varied stock and the slow part is typing. It helps least when your items are high-value, need careful authentication or have faults that take long explanations, because you will rewrite most of the draft anyway.

A useful test: time ten listings written by hand, then ten with AI help, including the review. If the AI drafts save time after you have checked and corrected them, keep using the tool.

Where Listalong Snap fits

Listalong Snap is our phone app for turning a batch of item photos into eBay listings. You photograph each item, tap Next item and keep going. Snap then uses the photos and your notes to prepare titles, descriptions and supported item details, using eBay’s category requirements to fill fields such as brand, size and model where there is enough evidence.

Every draft stays editable. You choose the condition and the price, with a shortcut to eBay sold listings, and you decide when to publish. Snap is in private iPhone testing, with Android on the way. Sign up for launch updates to hear when it’s available.

Frequently asked questions

Does eBay have an AI listing tool in Australia?

Yes. In its 28 October 2026 update, eBay confirmed that its latest Magical Listing experience had expanded to new and reactivated Australian listers. Older AI description suggestions are also available. Check your own account rather than assuming every seller has the same experience.

Can an AI tool tell if an item works?

No. A photo can show that a camera or console looks intact, but not whether it powers on, holds a charge or works properly. Working condition has to come from your own testing or notes.

Am I responsible for mistakes in an AI-written listing?

Yes. The listing is published under your account, so you are responsible for its accuracy. eBay’s picture policy also requires photos that accurately represent the item. Review every AI draft before publishing.
