Lifeline Queensland lists its next Brisbane Bookfest for 16–24 January 2027 at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, South Brisbane. If you are buying books to resell, the price on the table is only the first number to check. A $3 hardback can cost more to send than to buy, and a valuable first edition may look almost identical to a much cheaper reprint.
Before you go
The organiser’s published plan, checked on 5 November 2026, lists free entry and books from $2.50. It gives a 7:30 am start on the first Saturday, 8:30 am on the remaining days, and a 4 pm close on the final Sunday. Check the current event page for prices, times, entry information and transport arrangements when planning your visit. Lifeline Queensland Bookfest details
Choose a section you already know. You may spot a missing dust jacket on a familiar series, or recognise that a technical manual is two revisions out of date. Give yourself a limit you can carry and list. Ten substantial books can make the trip back much harder than ten shirts.
Make sure the sold copy is the same book
Look at the title and copyright pages as well as the cover. Record the author, publisher, edition or printing, binding and ISBN where available. A search by title can mix paperbacks, different translations, signed copies and boxed sets. A matching ISBN narrows the search. Check the printing and condition of the copy in your hand.
- Illustrated and specialist books: open at several places. Check plates, fold-out maps, inserts and any material promised on the cover.
- Fiction and collectibles: check for a jacket, writing, torn pages and damage to the binding. Use the printing statement rather than inferring a first printing from an old copyright date.
- Sets: count the volumes and check they belong to the same edition. One missing volume changes which listings make fair comparisons.
Use Australian sold results where possible. Compare item price and postage separately. A high asking price for the only other copy online gives you little evidence about the time it will take to find a buyer. How to use eBay sold listings
A hardback versus a boxed set
Here are two hypothetical baskets, with assumed fees and postage. Replace the figures with costs for your own parcel and marketplace.
| Amount | Hardback | Complete set |
|---|---|---|
| Sale price plus delivery paid by buyer | $30 | $64 |
| Purchase cost | $4 | $15 |
| Packed postage plus protective packaging | $12 | $22 |
| Assumed selling fees | $4 | $8 |
| Left before your time and overhead | $10 | $19 |
If the boxed set takes 40 minutes to check, describe and pack, a $24 hourly allowance uses $16 of the $19. A hardback that takes 10 minutes uses $4 of its $10. Under those assumptions the single book leaves $6 after time, compared with $3 for the set. Change the time, packing or sale price and the decision can reverse. Use the reseller ROI calculator with a conservative sale price.
Pack one before buying a shelf full
Measure and weigh a comparable book inside the protection you intend to use. Leave room to protect the corners and stop the book sliding. For a set, estimate the packed dimensions as well as the combined weight. Check the current postage quote to the intended destination before promising buyers a flat shipping charge.
At home, photograph the actual edition statement, spine, corners and defects. Save one stock record per item or set to be sold, with the receipt cost and shelf location. After the first few sales, compare the profit and time with your sourcing estimates. That evidence is more useful for your next book sale than a list of authors to buy at any price.
