Make a day of it

  • Choose a small cluster near where you are staying; a state-wide list is not a single-day route.
  • Check current opening times, compare prices and inspect condition. Recommendations describe past experiences, and donated stock changes.

Set a budget, inspect seams, zips and damage, and check sold prices if you plan to resell. A shop’s broad range does not guarantee a particular item or a profitable find.

How we chose these shops

Our picks draw on public recommendations and independent guides. The order reflects the sources we checked, with equal ranks where support is tied. It is a researched shortlist, not a nationwide customer poll.

How the ranking works

We searched the web for op-shop recommendations across all eight states and territories, then checked named branches against our directory and operator information. This research records 37 qualifying sources and 66 recommended branches, alongside our original directory suggestions (134 candidates in total). Sources were checked on 20 October 2026; publication or update dates run from 2024 to that date. An updated article can contain older advice, and a post date is not necessarily the date of a visit.

The rule: a specific branch receives one point per Reddit thread containing a recommendation from a commenter without a disclosed connection to that shop, and one point per editorial publisher recommending it. Extra replies, upvotes and repeated articles from the same publisher do not add points. General praise for a chain or suburb, plain directory listings, known self-promotion, sponsored recommendations and operator descriptions do not earn points. We cannot independently verify commenters’ identities or visits.

The order: more qualifying sources means a higher rank within this guide. Equal counts share a rank and are ordered alphabetically, including where a tie crosses the ten-shop cut-off. Shops with no qualifying source are unranked. The national list uses the same candidate pool without reserving a place for every state. This guide considers 134 candidates.

6 other researched shops have the same source count as the last entry. Tied shops appear alphabetically, including at the ten-shop cut-off; a place outside this list is not evidence of lower quality.

The limits: this is a manually researched sample, not a survey or a count of everything said online. Search results, source availability and the amount of discussion vary substantially by place. A larger count does not prove a better shop; one-source recommendations are particularly tentative. We count recommendations even when they include qualifications, show relevant caveats, and do not calculate net sentiment or claim unanimous approval. We have not visited every shop or compared all prices.

Operator links support practical details, not the recommendation count. Listalong community reviews remain separate, and no Google star ratings or customer totals are inferred from this research. Inclusion was not sold. Read our community guidelines or suggest a shop or source for a future revision.
