Australia Post has published its 2026 Christmas sending dates. For an eBay or Depop seller, the next job is to turn the relevant date into a packing and lodgement plan. A last posting date is not automatically your shop’s last order date.
The examples below were checked on 5 November 2026. Confirm the current Australia Post Christmas sending guide before making a time-sensitive offer to a buyer.
Check the route before choosing a deadline
These are selected metro-to-metro examples from Australia Post’s published schedule, not a complete national timetable:
| Sending route | Service | Published 2026 sending date |
|---|---|---|
| NSW metro to Victoria metro | Parcel Post | Monday 21 December |
| South Australia metro to Western Australia metro | Parcel Post | Friday 18 December |
| Queensland metro to Northern Territory metro | Parcel Post | Monday 14 December |
| South Australia metro to Victoria metro | Express Post | Wednesday 23 December |
| South Australia metro to Western Australia metro | Express Post | Tuesday 22 December |
Australia Post specifies 2:30 pm for over-the-counter lodgement on these cut-off dates and says to allow extra time outside metro areas. Check its separate guidance for international and island destinations. Posting later may mean arrival after Christmas. Official dates and route details
If you sell nationally, write down the routes you actually serve. A single banner saying “Order by 23 December” can give the wrong impression to a buyer whose parcel needs a different service or a longer journey.
Set an order deadline you can meet
Work backwards from a suitable lodgement day:
- Decide when you can physically hand over the parcel.
- Allow time to inspect, pack and label the item.
- Allow time to find the correct stock and resolve any missing order details.
- Set an order cut-off that leaves room for those jobs.
For example, suppose you choose to lodge a batch on Friday morning, but you only pack on Thursday evening. An order arriving late on Friday is not part of that batch simply because the carrier’s sending date has not ended.
Your own plan might be “orders paid by Wednesday evening enter Thursday’s packing batch”. That is an example of an internal workflow, not an Australia Post rule or a delivery guarantee. Adjust it to the way you actually work.
Check the label process for each marketplace
Before packing a mixed batch, open each paid order and check the delivery method attached to it. Keep the order reference, item and label together until the parcel is ready.
There are current changes to both platforms’ Australian shipping workflows. The eBay postage guide explains the prepaid-label rollout starting from 11 November 2026 and why account activation matters. The Depop shipping guide covers its available Australian order flows.
Do not buy a second label simply because you are in a hurry. If an order requires its platform-supplied label, follow that order’s instructions. Keep orders needing a different postage process out of the wrong batch.
Prepare the stock before the busiest week
Choose one manageable batch of listings and check that each item is ready to dispatch. Match the stock number to the storage location, inspect the condition and make sure any promised accessories are present.
For clothing, have suitable packaging and a working scale ready. For breakable items, work out the packing method before accepting a last-minute request. Discovering that an item needs a different box can use up the margin you allowed in your schedule.
If you crosslist, review matching adverts after every completed sale. A rush of enquiries is not a reason to leave an already-sold item available somewhere else. The inventory reconciliation guide provides a repeatable stock check.
Give buyers a dispatch plan they can understand
When someone asks whether an item will arrive before Christmas, answer with the information you can support:
I can lodge this parcel on [date] using [service]. Please check the delivery estimate for your postcode before ordering. I cannot promise Christmas arrival from that estimate alone.
If the requested timing is beyond your practical deadline:
My next available lodgement day is [date]. I do not want to promise delivery before your event when I cannot support that timing. If collection would suit you, we can check whether that option is available for this listing.
Only offer an alternative service or collection method you can actually provide through the relevant marketplace arrangement. Update the order or listing properly rather than leaving contradictory promises in messages.
Plan the days when you will stop dispatching
Write down your last packing session, last lodgement trip and first realistic dispatch day after the break. Those dates may differ from the dates you are travelling.
Use the eBay and Depop holiday-mode checklist to review both shops before you leave. Keep a short list of existing orders and unresolved buyer requests so you return to a clear queue rather than trying to reconstruct it from messages.
Frequently asked questions
Is there one Australia Post Christmas cut-off date for all parcels?
No. Check the sending location, destination and service for your parcel. A metro example is not a deadline for every regional, remote or international route.
Should my shop’s Christmas order deadline match the postal cut-off?
Build in the time you need to receive the order, find the stock, pack it and lodge it. Your last practical order time may be earlier than the carrier’s sending date.
Can I promise Christmas delivery if I buy a label before the deadline?
Buying a label is preparation, not handover to the carrier. Use the actual lodgement plan and current delivery information when replying to a buyer, and avoid an unsupported arrival promise.
